Our Fellows

Matthew Bonomo, MD
Admin (2025 - 2027)
he/him
Hey, I’m Matt. I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Growing up, I was a high-energy kid. I loved playing team sports—mostly baseball, but also soccer, basketball, and football. When I wasn’t in school or sports, I kept busy by eating chicken nuggets and annoying my older sister. I went to Amherst College for undergrad. I played baseball there for a hot sec my first year, and I majored in Neuroscience and being unprepared for winter. After undergrad, I worked for 2 years as a scribe and volunteer coordinator at an FQHC run by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Working there, I learned so much from the incredible patients and some outstanding physician mentors. I went to the Pritzker School of Medicine because of its strong sense of community and its commitment to service. Going to Pritzker was one of the best decisions I ever made (Thank you, Dr. Carter!). I ultimately decided to go into Emergency Medicine because I love working with the whole team in our ED and because I love that we take care of anyone who comes through our doors. As a resident, I found a passion for helping improve how our ED functions, and this led me to pursue our fellowship in ED Administration. I’m so excited to continue to be a part of the UCEM family! Outside of the hospital, my hobbies include: pretending to be an Iron Chef, all kinds of exercise, playing Nintendo, having my heart broken by the 49ers, picnics at Promontory Point, restoring things that I find in my alley, jumping in Lake Michigan, surfing (though not much since moving to Chicago), and watching scary movies.

Zoë Curry, MD
EMS
she/her
Hi, I’m Zoë! I was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, then ventured to the South for undergrad at Vanderbilt University where I studied Spanish & public health. I took a gap year working as an EMT back home before completing medical school at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). My time with ground EMS not only piqued my interest in EM, but solidified my passion for health equity and patient advocacy. EMS providers have the unique opportunity to meet patients where they’re at (literally!) and step directly into their neighborhoods and homes. This uniquely positions them to provide socially-conscious care through programs like community paramedicine which I hope to help expand as an EMS fellow this year. Outside of the ED you’ll find me at a concert, watching Bravo, or finishing a NYT crossword (I’m addicted…haven’t missed a day since 2022). So excited to serve the Southside community and join the UChicago EM family!

Karly Farr, MD
Medical Education (2024 - 2026)
she/her
Hello- I’m Karly! I just finished my residency at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn and am excited to be returning to the city where I grew up- Chicago! During my 4th year of residency I served as our chief resident of education where I planned and coordinated our weekly didactic sessions and was involved in various education projects and activities. This role solidified my interest in a career in medical education and I am excited to be pursuing that as a fellow at UChicago. My specific education interests are undergraduate medical education and on-shift learning. Around Chicago you can find me jogging on the lakefront, trying new restaurants, looking for the closest thing to a NYC bagel, or spending a cozy night at home with my family. I also enjoy backpacking, crafting, and all things reality TV. I am excited to get to know the unique patient population at UofC and work with all the amazing residents and students!

Matthew Heffernan, MD
EMS (2025 - 2026)
he/him
Hi everyone, my name is Matt! I was born and raised in Norwood Park on Chicago’s northwest side. Outside of medicine, I’m passionate about music, enjoy theater, love travel and proudly support the Chicago White Sox. Growing up, I thought being a doctor in the emergency department was the coolest job in the world. That belief carried me through undergrad at the University of Illinois, medical school at Northwestern, and emergency medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. During residency, I not only confirmed my love for emergency medicine, but also discovered a passion for retrieval medicine and prehospital care. I spent my elective time flying with UW Med Flight, joining EMS ride-alongs, and exploring prehospital education. For the first time, my childhood perspective shifted: being a doctor who helps bring emergency care to patients outside of the hospital may be the coolest job in the word. After residency, I stayed at UW for a Retrieval and Critical Care Transport Fellowship, working as a flight physician and taking on a broader prehospital role with UW EMS. Now, it’s time to come home to Chicago to complete my EMS fellowship — and I could not be more excited to do that at the University of Chicago.

Ziomara Jurado, MD
Ultrasound (2025 - 2026)
she/her
Hello!! I am Zee, the current ultrasound fellow. I moved around the US but mainly lived in Nebraska where I did undergrad at NWU and medical school at UNMC. I made the big move to Chicago and finished my residency at UChicago and excited to stay for fellowship! My medical school did a fantastic job implementing ultrasound within the curriculum and have had a continued interest in bedside POCUS throughout residency. It is truly amazing how many diagnosis you can make within 5 minutes of meeting a patient with an US probe. I hope to focus on ultrasound education and all things POCUS. When I am not in the emergency room you will find me napping, eating Hot Cheetos (I do this frequently on shift too), rollerskating, and sampling all the tasty eats around Chicago.

Douglas Moss, MD
Admin (2024 - 2026)
he/him
Hello! My name is Douglas (Dougie) Moss. I grew up just outside of Chicago in a suburb called Northbrook. I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for undergrad, where I became interested in leadership and advocacy through roles on the university’s student government and class board. I spent the 2 years following graduation expanding access to healthcare through a service year with the Wisconsin HealthCorps and then through a non-profit called Covering Wisconsin. These experiences allowed me the privilege of assisting vulnerable populations enroll in affordable health insurance and navigate the healthcare system. The healthcare inequalities I witnessed were truly devastating and fueled my passion for making healthcare more accessible and equitable. I completed medical school at the Chicago Medical School, where I participated in the university’s Curriculum Committee and founded an organization called the Chicago Medical Opioid Crisis to help address the opioid crisis. I completed my Emergency Medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic, during which I served on Minnesota’s chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and on ACEP’s national Emergency Medicine Practice Committee. I am thrilled to be the UChicago ED Admin Fellow, where I will also be obtaining my MBA from Booth. Through all these experiences, I hope to improve the current healthcare infrastructure both locally and nationally. It is an honor to be back in Chicago providing emergency care to the Chicago community!

Udoka Oji, MD
Medical Education (2025 - 2027)
she/her
Hi, I’m Udoka! I was born in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, and immigrated to the U.S. with my parents at age two. I grew up in the greater Baltimore area and went on to study Neuroscience and Literary Arts at Brown University. I fell in love with Emergency Medicine during college while volunteering in EDs in both my hometown and Providence, drawn to the fast-paced, team-based environment. I earned my MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where I was actively involved with SNMA and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. These experiences deepened my commitment to health equity, social EM, and health policy—values that continue to shape my work. I recently completed my emergency medicine residency at the University of Chicago, where I’m thrilled to be staying on as the medical education fellow. I’m passionate about teaching, community-centered care, and improving access for vulnerable populations. Outside of medicine, I love music, literature, cooking, and indulging in trashy reality TV. I’m excited to keep exploring Chicago’s vibrant food, arts, and culture scene!

Georgina Sorrentino, MD
Global EM (2025 - 2026)
she/her
Hi everyone! My name is Georgina and I’m very excited to join the University of Chicago as a Global Emergency Medicine and Medical Education Fellow! I grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago and went to the University of Michigan for undergrad. Afterwards I spent a year in Detroit as an AmeriCorps member tutoring high school students and engaging in community service. Missing the pizza, I came back to Chicago for medical school at the University of Illinois and went on to The Ohio State University for residency training. I’ve always been passionate about global health and health equity and participated in community-based participatory research on disaster preparedness in the Caribbean as a medical student. In residency I’ve been involved in a research project focused on neonatal resuscitation training programs in Kenya and traveled to rural Honduras as part of a primary care medical brigade. I’m looking forward to building upon my global health experiences in fellowship and my skills as an educator both among our Chicago cohort and with our partnerships abroad. I’m grateful for the opportunity to provide emergency care to the underserved populations on the south side of Chicago and to continue growing as a physician among this diverse community. When I’m not at work you can usually find me on a patio somewhere eating Italian or Mexican food, knitting, and spending time with friends and family!

Sean Thompson, M.D.
Medical Education (2024 - 2026)
he/him
What’s up, everyone! I’m Sean and I’m from the northern suburbs of San Diego, CA in a very “California-stereotypical” beach town called Encinitas. I didn’t stray too far from the beach for undergrad and medical school and attended UC Santa Barbara followed by UC Irvine. I was drawn to Univeristy of Chicago for residency because of its strong reputation as a leader in diversity, quality training, and care for the surrounding South Side community. Despite numerous zoom-related blunders on interview day, here still felt like home and I’m happy to say it still will be for fellowship! My academic interests in medical education include efforts to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in GME practices, mitigating resident burnout, and continuing to enhance qualitative feedback methods. Outside of the hospital, you can catch me lake-side (no surprise there, this California boy needs a beach) doing anything and everything sand and water related, at the hottest new bar or restaurant in the city, or live tweeting my latest reality TV obsession.
